Preparation Steps
- Preheat oven to 425°F.
- Lightly grease an 11 x 7-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced potatoes, melted butter, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Arrange half of the potato slices in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup of the Cheddar cheese. Layer the remaining potato slices on top.
- In a small saucepan, bring the milk, bay leaf, and nutmeg to a boil. Pour this mixture evenly over the potatoes.
- Sprinkle the remaining Cheddar cheese over the top. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Garnish with fresh thyme before serving.
Notes
For an even richer flavor, you can substitute some of the Cheddar cheese with Gruyere. If you find the potatoes are browning too quickly, you can loosely tent the dish with aluminum foil during the last 15-20 minutes of baking.
